How To Hire A Contractor

Better Business Bureau | Accredited Business

A lot of people donít seem to know this one, so here are a few tips.

First, the law is that any contractor who advertises in the state of California MUST be licensed, no matter the size of the job. So look and ask for a license number and check it:

Go go: www.cslb.ca.gov and plug in the license number. Note the name of the company (does it match the name of the company being advertised?). Scroll to the bottom of the page and see if they have workerís compensation insurance. If they say they donít, ask when you call them, who will be coming out. If itís the name on the license, no problem. If it is a technician, or any other name, hang up. They said they didnít have employees, so you know whoever is coming out is not licensed or insured. They will say they are sub contractors, let me assure you, they are not.

Check the Better Business Bureau. Contrary to a recent news story debunking their credibility, they ARE a credible source. We have had to work with them and a client in the past and they resolved the matter in the clientís favor. They support YOU. Make sure they have a good rating. It takes a lot of accountability to maintain a good rating over the years.

Use the following web sites and look for reviews: Google and Yelp

If you have several projects to do, Angieís List is a wonderful source of referrals. A company canít get on Angieís List directly. Your clients have to refer you. This is like having a giant data base of reviews for contractors in various specialties in your area. Thereís a small annual fee and I think itís worth it. Check out our ratings, they are all unsolicited by us. Weíre grateful.

Now, you can make an informed decision about who you hire in any of the trades! Taking 10 minutes to check things out will give you a good sense of the company.
